Finding a Good Church

God calls us to come together.  The church at large is the ‘body of Christ’; all who have committed their lives to the one true God.  Christians should attend a local church for the worship of God, learning from preaching, growth and service, and mutual friendship and encouragement.  During worship and generally, God’s presence should be there, as Christ is the head of the church.

At church, the Lord can also bring physical or other healing to individuals.  God can inform or encourage people through gifts of the Holy Spirit, such as through prophecy or words of wisdom/knowledge.  Personal testimonies are also encouraging.  Church helps His children to actively love God and others, and become like their Saviour Christ.

Visiting some local churches can help you find one that seems right for you and your family.  Although there is no perfect church, some other key features of a good church are as follows:

  • The whole Bible is recognised as the infallible Word of God. Those who preach, seek God to sincerely relate the truth accurately, in love.  Everything is also backed by scriptural prayer.
  • The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is central.
  • In God’s grace, avoiding sin and forgiving others scripturally are promoted.
  • A culture of giving, and caring for others is prevalent. This can be through prayer, practical helps, finances etc.  Scripture encourages us to give freely, as we purpose in our hearts.  God allows us to take part in His building the Church, and loving people in the ways they need.  Many churches still believe in giving a tithe (ten percent of earnings) plus more as desired.
  • A genuine unity and love is evident amongst the members.

A healthy local church is a joyful place, where all are valued and growing in Christ.
